Aurora University's Vago Field was the site of this afternoon's overtime thriller between the Spartans and North Central College in women's lacrosse. AU fell in overtime 14-13.
The teams headed into overtime tied 10-10 as neither team capitalized on the offensive side of the ball over the final 11:54 of regulation. In the overtime, the Spartans took a two goal lead (12-10) through the first three minutes of the six minute overtime. Scoring for the Spartans were
Danielle Morgan and
Chloe Madison with the Madison goal coming with six seconds left in the first half of overtime.
After the goalkeepers switched goal ends, North Central responded with the next two goals to tie the game up at 12-12. The Spartans took back the lead with 56.7 seconds on the overtime clock with Morgan assisting on a
Kenny Hughes goal, her fourth of the game.
But the final minute was unlucky to the Spartans as AU had possession only to have a Cardinal back check result in a turnover and fast break that would end in a goal for the visitors and a 14-13 lead. AU did have a chance to tie the game though when Madison had a free position shot that was saved just before the final horn sounded.
In regulation, neither team held a lead larger than two goals with the game being tied seven times before overtime. AU opened the games scoring 1:24 into the game when Madison assisted
Lexie Wright on the first of her four goals on the day. After North Central scored twice to take the lead, AU freshman
Taylor Arcivar scored her first college goal on a free position shot to tie the game up at two.
The game then went back and fourth with each team scoring twice with AU goals coming from
Andrea Colford and Hughes. Spartan
Rachel Cochran assisted on the Hughes goal, the first assist of three for her on the afternoon. Wright scored twice more in the first half as the teams went into the halftime intermission with a 7-6 North Central lead.
North Central scored to take an 8-6 lead early in the second half but the Spartans scored twice to tie the game with 19:55 to play. Hughes and Wright scored with both goals having assists from Cochran.
After a Cardinal goal gave the visitors the lead back, Morgan and Hughes scored unassisted goals to give the Spartans their first lead since the game was 1-0. North Central tied the game with 11:54 to play and that would be the last scoring in regulation and eventually sending the game into the thrilling overtime session.
AU freshman goalkeeper
Allee Samuel picked up the tough luck loss but she was phenomenal in goal, picking up 11 saves on the day. With the loss, AU is now 0-3 overall in 2015. Next action for the Spartan women's lacrosse team comes on Wednesday, March 18 when they travel to Elmhurst College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Elmhurst College.
