AU men get back to winning ways with 15-5 victory over Elmhurst

The Aurora University Spartans hosted the visiting Blue Jays of Elmhurst College on Wednesday, March 18, 2015. The Spartans were victorious, winning in commanding fashion, 15-5.

The Spartans took the field on the brisk spring afternoon for their first home game in over five contests. Readjusting to Vago field the Spartans started slow but senior Nolan Miller broke the scoring drought with a laser shot to the top right corner of the net with 11:25 remaining in the first quarter. Senior Max Obriecht assisted on the goal.

The Spartans tossed two more goals by the visiting Blue Jays in the first quarter leading 3-0 as time expired. Sophomore Bailey Smith (Garret Rosiek assist) and Obriecht (unassisted) tallied the goals.

Elmhurst's Matt Westhaver opened up the second quarter as he scored the Bluejays only goal for the half bringing the score 3-1. The Spartans retaliated, scoring six unanswered goals to head into halftime leading 9-1. During the scoring flood six different Spartans scored with Danny Loyall scoring on a man-up with an assist from Rosiek and Miller, Obriecht and Smith each scoring their second goals of the game during the run. Trevor McNamara scored a goal and Rosiek added one as well. JK Torres had two assists and Will Bradshaw added one assist as well.

As the Spartans broke for halftime a familiar feeling of victory hung over Vago Field. The Spartans stepped onto the turf for the second half and with confidence continued their commanding dominance though the scoring did take some time. Miller scored his third goal of the game at 7:52 left in the third quarter, bringing the score 10-1. \

AU freshman Steven Ruffin then scored at 7:00, his first collegiate goal with an assist from McNamara who also assisted on the Miller goal. Sophomore Jason Koziol gave AU a 12-1 lead on his 14th tally of the season with Rosiek picking up the assist.

In the last minute of the third quarter Elmhurst was able to score their second goal of the game leaving the score 12-2 as time expired and the fourth quarter began. The fourth quarter held a back and forth scoring as each team scored three goals. AU goal scorers included Max Matthai (Rosiek assist), Smith with the hat trick and freshman Nick Arleo scored his first goal with an assist from Kyle Lowy.

The final score was 15-5 with the Spartans claiming victory. The Spartans out shot the visiting Blue Jays 48-22 and AU keepers Tom Moriarty recorded four saves and Cameron Brooks had three saves on the day.
