Late rally not enough as Spartans fall to Robert Morris

The Spartans of Aurora University hosted the visiting Eagles of Robert Morris University on Saturday, March 7, 2015. The Spartans fell in a close contest, 10-7 with AU falling behind early and making a late come back that fell just short.

The teams took the field on a warm day and within the first 30 seconds of play, the visiting Eagles took a 1-0 lead over the Spartans. Three minutes later, Spartan Andrea Colford evened the score 1-1, the goal being her fourth of the season.

The Spartans and Eagles traded goals over the next 13 minutes with AU sophomore Kenny Hughes collecting the Spartan tally. The Eagles took a small advantage at 12:24 by a goal from Mary Prunte. This goal started a run for the Eagles that would leave the Spartans trailing by four at the half, 7-3. Spartan Rachel Cochran scored the AU goal at 2:24 of the first.

Through the first half the Spartans led key statistics beating the Eagles on ground balls 13-11 and also out shooting the visiting Eagles by three (13-10).

The second half did not start out well for the Spartans as the Eagles soared to a six goal lead off two quick points in the half, 9-3. The Spartans refused to fold and began to battle back.

The Spartans scored four unanswered goals. Sharing the ball well, three different Spartans scored in this run with Cochran (second), Danielle Morgan and Hughes (second and third goals) all registered goals for the run. The final goal from Hughes came at 9:06 and cut the lead to two at 9-7.

But Robert Morris gained possession and spread the field in a almost stalling tactic in the final minutes, slowing the Spartan's comeback hopes. The Eagles ended the Spartans comeback hopes for good with a final goal at 1:14, to stretch the score to 10-7.

With the loss, AU is now 0-2 on the season. Next action for the Spartan women's lacrosse team comes on Tuesday, March 10 when they host North Central College. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. on Vago Field.
