Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

AU women hang on late to defeat Mount St. Joseph 13-12

The Aurora University women's lacrosse team hosted the Lions of the College of Mount St. Joseph on Saturday afternoon, Aurora tamed the Lions in a 13-12 victory.

Prior to the game starting, AU recognized their one senior, Samantha Cichy with a senior day recognition as well as holding a moment of silence for Mount St. Joseph student-athlete Lauren Hill who recently lost her battle with cancer.

As the game got started, the Lions took the early 1-0 lead but the Spartans responded with two unanswered goals. Chloe Madison and Rachel Cochran were credited with the two goals. In a back and forth matchup, Mount St. Joseph answered with two goals of their own to give the Lions the 3-2 lead.

The Spartans then went on a three goal rampage with Kenny Hughes, Lauren Whitfield and Cochran tallying the goals. The Spartans took the 5-3 lead with just ten minutes left in the half but as had been the case earlier, Mount St. Joseph would tally four of the next five goals to end the half. The AU tally came from Madison and going into halftime the Spartans were trailing 7-6.

AU would come out scoring, notching the first goal of the half from Danielle Morgan at 27:55. The Lions quickly answered to give them the lead back (8-7).

AU would answer with a streak of four goals, Morgan scored twice and Hughes and Cochran added one each. The Spartans led 11-8 with just over 15:00 minutes to play.

The teams once again traded goals back and forth with both Spartan goals coming from Madison. With just over six minutes left to play, AU held a 13-10 lead.

But Mount St. Joseph scored two goals less than a minute a part and with three minutes to play, AU led by a narrow one goal advantage at 13-12. The Spartans would hold one down the stretch and end the thrilling game with the 13-12 score.

With the school record setting win, AU is now 6-5 overall and 3-1 in the MWLC. Next action for the Spartan women's lacrosse comes on Monday, April 13 when they travel to Dubuque University. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. in Dubuque, Iowa.
