On a breezy and cool Vago Field, the Spartans of Aurora University hosted the Eagles of Benedictine University in a Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference match-up Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans used a high scoring second-half to soar past the Eagles 17-11.
AU jumped out to a 5-1 lead midway through the first-half behind two goals each from
Kenny Hughes and
Chloe Madison and one goal from
Lauren Whitfield. Madison had three assists with Hughes added one.
But the Spartans longtime school rival from Benedictine battled back to tie the game up at 6-6 with 5:33 left to play in the first half.
Andrea Colford scored the lone AU goal in the BU 5-1 run. AU was not done scoring though as they would take a 7-6 lead into halftime after a goal from
Rachel Cochran with Madison picking up her fourth assist of the half on the play.
Coming out of halftime, the Spartans scored four unanswered goals in the first 8:18 of the half to take an 11-6 lead. Hughes scored the first two goals with Madison and Cochran following up with one each. Madison assisted on the second Hughes goal.
Once again, the Eagles would not go away quietly as they scored four times in a span of four minutes to cut the Spartan lead down to two at 12-10. Colford scored the lone AU goal for her second of the day.
As they had done in the first half, the Spartans responded with a 5-1 run to end the game. Hughes scored four to finish the game with eight goals and Madison added the other AU score for her fourth of the game to go along with six assists.
Allee Samuel earned the win in goal, picking up seven saves. With the win, AU is now 9-6 overall and 6-1 in the MWLC. Next action for the Spartan women's lacrosse comes on Satur
day, April 15 when they travel to Carroll University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
