With a 3-0 win in game one of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Alverno College, the Aurora University softball team clinched the 2015 NACC Softball Conference Championship. The NACC title is AU's third straight and 22nd conference championship in AU softball history.
The first three innings saw a pitcher's dual play out as Spartan
Vanessa Hartzell allowed just one runner by walk and would only give up one hit in the game as she tossed a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts.
In the top of the fourth, AU freshman
Larkin Langston gave the Spartans their first hit, a solo home run to center field on the first pitch she saw. AU added a run in the fifth with a leadoff double from Aimee Raynor producing a run as she scored on a sacrifice bunt from
Taylor Moore and in the sixth AU manufactured another run. Mandey SHrader singled to leadoff and stole second base.
Logan Cahill then singled driving in Shrader for the 3-0 AU lead.
Hartzell struck out four of the final six outs for Alverno and the Spartans picked up their 28th win to improve to 28-5 overall and 19-0 in the NACC.
Game two was all AU with the Spartan leading 13-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when mother nature unleashed rains that suspended the contest. The game will possibly be finished at a date to be determined and will be announced once made available.
Next action for the Spartan softball team is scheduled for
Saturday, April 25, 2015 when they host Concordia University Chicago. Game one is set for 12:00 p.m. at the Stuart Sports Complex in Montgomery, Illinois.
