The Aurora University softball team won a pair of low scoring contests over Concordia University Chicago as the Spartans celebrated senior day between games.
Game One
Aurora 4Â Concordia Chicago 1
AU used two innings to do all the scoring they would need as they beat Concordia 4-1. The Spartans left two runners on in each of the first two innings but capitalized in the third. A lead-off double from
Logan Cahill was followed up by a one-out triple from
Steph Starr and a single by Aimee Raynor to score two for a 2-0 AU lead.
Concordia did plate a run in the fifth inning against AU starting pitcher
Vanessa Hartzell and Raynor came up with a big defensive play in the inning, gunning down the would be tying run at the plate on a single to right field for the final out of the inning. Hartzell would scatter five hits and allow the lone run while striking out eight in the winning effort.
The Spartans added two insurance runs in the sixth inning as
Taylor Moore led off the inning with a double and one out later,
Lauren Huebner reached on an infield single. After Huebner stole second and a second out was made, Cahill stepped up again, lining a two-run double off the left center field fence. The Spartans then finished off the game with three outs in the seventh for the 4-1 win.
Game Two
Aurora 2 Concordia Chicago 0
In game two, one swing of the bat provided all the runs in the game. Cahill reached on a walk with one out in the bottom of the first and the next Spartan to the plate was freshman
Larkin Langston. Langston promptly hit a two-run home run and the Spartans led 2-0, the eventual final score.
AU starting pitcher
Natalie Zanella went back to the circle and took care of the rest of the game for the Spartans. She allowed only three Cougar hits and struck out three while tossing the complete game shutout. With the wind blowing straight in all day, several batted balls by the Spartans were held up in the gusts that otherwise would have left the yard.
With the sweep, AU is now 30-5 overall and 21-0 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan softball team comes on
Monday, April 27, 2015 when they travel to Alverno College to complete the second game of the doubleheader that was delayed on
Friday due to rain. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with the Spartans leading 13-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
