Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Spartans grab first half lead and hold on for MWLC victory at Wartburg

The Aurora University women's lacrosse team jumped out to a first half lead at Wartburg College on Friday afternoon in Waverly, Iowa and held on for the 11-9 MWLC victory.

After Wartburg took an early 1-0 lead, the Spartans answered with five unanswered goals to finish the first-half and took the 5-1 lead into halftime. Kenny Hughes scored back to back unassisted goals before Taylor Arcivar, Chloe Madison and Lauren Whitfield all scored as well.

AU goalkeeper Allee Samuel had six of her nine saves in the game in the first half. She would hold on in the second half for the victory.

In the second-half, Wartburg once again started the scoring, with three goals in the first three minutes to cut the AU lead to one at 5-4. But Hughes and Madison combined for six goals with each scoring three times including a women-down goal from Madison. With 14.38 to play in the game, AU led 11-5. But the home team was not done and put a small scare in the Spartans, scoring four times for the eventual 11-9 final score.

With the win, AU is now 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the MWLC. Next action for the Spartan women's lacrosse team comes on Wednesday, April 8 when they travel to Cornell College. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
