The No. 13 ranked Aurora University women's soccer team opened the 2015 season on Tuesday night at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. The Spartans won in come from behind fashion 3-1 with a record setting performance from senior forward
Nicci Bermudes.
Trailing 1-0 with a North Central goal in the 18th minute, Bermudes sent the Spartans into halftime tied up 1-1 with her first goal of the year with 46 seconds remaining in the opening half. Junior
Hannah Scahill assisted for her first point as a Spartan on the play.
With the Spartan defense and goalkeeper
Caitlin deRuiter holding strong,Bermudes struck again just under midway through the second half.
In the 62nd minute (62:02), senior Alisha Osegura led Bermudes on a break-away which Bermudes had no problem depositing into the back of the Cardinal net for a 2-1 advantage. The only 1:55 later, Bermudes struck again, this time unassisted. With her third goal, she became the all-time leading point scorer at AU, surpassing Tara (Utrata) Daniels. One game into her senior season, Bermudes has 176 points on her career.
AU's deRuiter earned the win with eight saves. With the win, AU is now 1-0 on the season and extends their unbeaten streak to 21 matches. Next action for the Spartan women's soccer team comes on
Friday, September 4 when they host the Chelsea Lloyd Memorial Classic. AU takes on University of Dubuque at 2:00 p.m. on Vago Field.
