Third period unfriendly to Spartans in loss at Lawrence

The Aurora University Spartans held an early third period lead but were unable to hold on and lost at Lawrence University 6-4 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Lawrence scored the only goal of the first period at 8:54.
Just 43 seconds into the second period, Lawrence took a 2-0 lead.
At 17:32 in the second and with six seconds remaining on a power play, AU senior Michael Mikulan snapped a 198:39 scoreless streak. He was assisted by Ron Lindgren and Gregory Sauers.
The Spartans knotted the game 2-2 just two minutes later with Tom Green scoring on an assist from Trevor Hoth.
In the final minutes of the second, Lawrence regained the lead with a power play goal.
AU was not done scoring in the second period as Hoth scored with 1:08 left. He had helpers from Greene and Tim Santopoalo.
Early in the third period the Spartans took their first lead of the game. Santopoalo tallied the goal with assists from Hoth and Connor Quinn.
But two Lawrence goals 47 seconds a part (15:17 and 14:30) gave the home team the lead 5-4.
Lawrence added one more goal on the power play midway through the period for the final 6-4 score.

Trevor Hoth had one goal and two assists.
Tim Santopoalo had one goal and one assist.
Tom Greene had one goal and one assist.
Michael Mikulan had one goal on the power play.
Ron Lindgren, Connor Quinn and Gregory Sauers each had one assist.
Jared Rutledge made 39 saves for Aurora
 
FOR THE FOES
Nick Felan and Renato Engler each had one goal and two assists.
Steve Hughes had three assists.
Matthias Soderqvist had 31 saves in the shutout win.

Next action for the Spartan men's hockey team comes on Friday, January 22, 2016 when they host Northland College. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva, Illinois.
