Spartans extinguish Inferno for fifth straight win

With a wide variety of special guests in attendance, the Aurora University women's basketball team defeated the Inferno of Alverno College 63-60 on Wednesday night. The contest was close throughout with the Spartans controlling the fourth period for the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans and Inferno traded baskets through the first ten minutes of the game. AU went into the second quarter leading the Inferno 14-13.
Alverno went on a quick 6-0 run early in the second quarter to take a 19-14 lead..
The Spartans quickly responded with a 5-0 run off of a three-pointer from Alyssa Brems which tied the score (21-21) with 6:20 left in the first half.
Led by 10 second period points from Anna Roszkowski the score was tied 27-27 with 4:44 to play before the half.
Alverno went on a 7-0 run and led 34-27 with just 1:16 left in the half.
AU freshman Mallory Cast knocked down a three pointer to cut the lead to four, 34-30, just before halftime.
The Spartans out-scored Alverno 11-5 to open the third period and took the lead halfway through (41-39) led by four points from Ashley Wilk.
Alverno went on an 11-2 run and took their largest lead of the night 50-43.
Spartan senior Bethany Dorrington hit two free throws to end the third quarter 50-45.
After Alverno built a seven point lead again, AU responded with a 6-0 run to pull the game close again.
Over the final five minutes of the fourth, AU picked up the intensity on defense and finished the game on a 10-4 run.
Despite their efforts, with 2:17 remaining in the game the Spartans still trailed by one at 60-59.
Dorrington hit a tough layup with 2:07 remaining to put the Spartans up 61-60.
Alverno would have the ball with 00:27 remaining and the Spartans defense was too much for them to handle. After forcing a tough missed shot, Dorrington was fouled and hit two key free throws (63-60) with 00:03 remaining to seal the victory.

BEYOND THE BOX
With the win AU now has a five game win streak, longest since the 2008-2009 season.

FOR THE SPARTANS
Anna Roszkowski had a double double with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Bethany Dorrington had 18 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

FOR THE FOES
Mollie Mikyska had 16 points and two rebounds
Gabby Hood had nine points and 11 rebounds.

UP NEXT
Next action for the Spartan women's basketball team comes on Saturday, January 30, 2016 when they host Edgewood College. Tip-off is set for 4:15 p.m. in Thornton Gymnasium.
