Buzzer beating tip-in lifts AU women over Falcons

The Aurora University women's basketball team defeated the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons 55-54 in thrilling fashion on Saturday evening. Spartan senior Ashley Wilk got a tip-in to fall as the buzzer sounded to give AU the one-point victory. Prior to tip-off AU recognized the five seniors on the team along with student-assistant coach Drew Cole.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After celebrating the seniors, AU jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first period.
AU led 16-10 with 2:38 to play in the first period but CUW finished the period on a 7-0 run to lead 17-16 at the end of one.
The teams traded baskets early in the second and the scores was tied 21-21 with seven minutes to play in the second.
The Spartans then ran off a 9-2 run to take a 30-23 lead on a jumper from Molly Rosenow with 2:17 on the game clock.
AU held a seven point lead heading into halftime, 32-25.
CUW came out in the third period on a 7-0 run and tied the game at 32 courtesy of an early trip into the bonus.
After a pair of Anna Roszkowski free throws, CUW a 9-0 run and led 41-34.
The Spartans cold shooting in the period continued and CUW led by a game high 10 points with one minute left in the third.
AU would get a three from Mallory Cast and a jumper from Kelly Evers in the final minute and trailed 48-41 at the end of three periods.
CUW scored the first two points of the fourth but AU responded to the adversity. AU ran off an 11-2 run behind four points each from Bethany Dorrington and Anna Roszkowski. With 1:59 to play the game was tied 52-52.
Both teams missed a shot on their possessions before a foul sent Kelly Evers to the free throw line. She made one of two with 16 seconds to go.
CUW then found themselves at the free throw line with seven seconds to go and after making both, set up a final AU possession.
Dorrington drove the basket and put up what looked like the final AU shot of the game. The shot rimmed out and into the arms of Ashley Wilk who quickly put the shot back up on a tip-in and as the buzzer sounded the shot went through the hoop giving AU the 55-54 win.

FOR THE SPARTANS
Senior Bethany Dorrington had 13 points and four assists.
Mallory Cast had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Senior Anna Roszkowski had 10 points and five rebounds.
Senior Kelly Evers had eight points and eight rebounds.
Senior Ashley Wilk had six points and four rebounds.
Senior Molly Rosenow had two points and two assists.
 
FOR THE FOES
Taylor DeLong had 12 points.

Next action for the Spartan women's basketball team comes on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 when they travel to Rockford University. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Rockford, Illinois.
