Spartans tie Gusties in game one of weekend home stand

The Aurora University men's hockey team returned to the ice for game one of a weekend non-conference home stand with Gustavus Adolphus College. The Spartans and Gusties played to a 3-3 overtime tie with all six goals of the game coming in the middle period.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Spartans dominated the opening period but the score remained 0-0 through the period as AU out shot Gustavus 12-4.
- Early in the first period AU was unable to capitalize on a 5v3 power play.
- Early in the second period, Gustavus took a 1-0 lead with a power play tally.
- AU then answered with three straight goals in the second at 10:58, 14:22 and 15:45 to grab a commanding 3-1 lead.
- The first AU tally came from Drew Doyon who got a beautiful pass from Jack DeMatteo at the front of the net and buried the tying goal.
- Minutes later, Dan Zielecki and Brendan Logan had a 2 on 0 break away that Zielecki buried for the first AU lead of the game.
- Minutes later Josh Delezenne scored with an assist to Liam Stirtzinger and Nick Minerva.
- An ensuing power play allowed Gustavus to pull back to within one at 3-2.
- With 1:20 left in the second, Gustavus tied the game after coincidental penalties led to 4 on 4 hockey.
- Both teams had chances in the third and overtime periods but both goalies stood strong for the tie.
