Spartans sweep opening weekend series with 8-2 victory

The Aurora University women's hockey team completed the opening weekend sweep with 8-2 victory over Chatham University.

RECORDS: Aurora University 2-0 overall; Chatham University 0-2 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Spartans took a 1-0 lead 3:10 into the first period when Ava Eid scored on an unassisted tally. 
- With nine minutes left in the first period, the Spartans were able to find the back of the Cougars net. Stephanie Schmunk scored on an assist by Lexie Martinez and Mac Cooke.
- The Cougars cut the score in half with 1:48 remaining in the first period.
- Freshman Peyton Elliot extended the Spartans lead 3-1 in the start of the second period scoring on an assist by freshmen Darci Matson. 
- With 6 minutes left in the second period, Lexie Martinez scored the power play tally with assists from Stephanie Schmunk and Olivia Matson.
- One minute later, Taylor Sims joined in on the scoring action extending AU's lead 5-1. She was assisted by Madison Gasper. 
- Before the end of the second period, Marisa Trevino scored on an assist from Stephanie Schmunk and Lexie Martinez. AU lead Chatham 6-1 going into the second intermission.
- The Spartans added two goals in the third period. Both Peyton Elliott and Stephanie Schumnk scoring their second goals of the contest.
- Chatham responded with a power play goal, but the Spartans would go on to win 8-2.
