Spartans grind out victory over Green Knights

The Aurora University Spartan football team battled the St. Norbert College Green Knights and windy conditions in De Pere, Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans rained on the SNC homecoming festivities with a 37-9 victory that saw the AU defense cause four turnovers and tally a safety in the winning effort.

How it happened
- The defense forced a quick SNC three and out on the opening series of the game and put the offense in prime field position.
- AU marched 60 yards in eight plays with Ian Luyando scoring on a 12-yard run and a 7-0 lead.
- The hosts answered right back with a drive of their own and scored on a 31-yard draw play. AU blocked the pat and maintained a 7-6 lead.
- A 19-yard return by James Mautino put the Spartans near midfield to start their second drive.
- A second straight 60 yard drive, this one 12-plays had the same results, an AU touchdown.
- Luyando hit a wide open Ty Pruett in the end zone on a fourth down play. The Matthew Hylek pat was good and AU led 14-6.
- On the third possession of the game the Spartans drove into the red zone but missed a fourth down try to turn the ball over on downs.
- AU led 14-6 heading to the second quarter.
- With the first possession of the second was set up by the first of 2-1/2 sacks on the day from Otis Watts.
- Luyando and Pruett connected for a second time to cap off an eight play, 57-yard drive and now a 21-6 AU lead.
- Ernesto Ramirez intercepted a SNC pass to give the offense the ball at midfield but the offensive drive stalled with a stopped fourth down try.
- SNC appeared to be able to take advantage of the good field position but the defense stopped that thought.
- On the 10th play of the SNC drive, Spartan Robbie Peterson stepped in front of a pass for a second straight interception.
- 35 seconds later the Spartans scored and went ahead 28-6. Luyando found Trey Madsen and 72 yards later he was dancing in the end zone.
- The AU defense struck again on the next SNC drive, this time Otis Watts scooping up a fumble and returning it eight yards to the SNC 24.
- Three plays in 45 seconds saw Jhe'Quay Chretin in the end zone and AU lead 35-6.
- AU led SNC 35-6 going to halftime.
- The third quarter saw neither team add points on the scoreboard with the AU defense making two fourth down stops including one being fourth and goal.
- Additionally, Jaylen Jordan came up with a fumble recovery while the Spartans had two turnovers of their own.
- Spartan punter Kevin Landa pinned the St. Norbert offense at their own five yard line early in the fourth quarter. On the third play, Otis Watts pressured the SNC quarterback in the end zone forcing an intentional grounding which resulted in a safety and a 37-6 AU lead.
- Late in the fourth quarter after an interception, SNC kicked a field goal for the eventual 37-9 final score.
- The Spartan offense ran off the final 4:32 of game time to secure the road NACC win.
