Spartans Outlast Carthage in non-conference battle

The Aurora University women's basketball team hosted Carthage College for a non-conference battle on Tuesday night that saw the Spartans come out on top 83-75 at Lancaster Court in Thornton Gymnasium. AU was led by Gabrielle Wolff (22 points) and Selena Vargas who finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds to keep the Spartans undefeated.

How it happened
- A back and forth first quarter saw AU shoot over 60% from the field and 50% from the beyond the arc.
- The score was tied at 22 after the first frame as Selena Vargas led a balanced AU scoring attack with six points.
- A finish at the rim from Kylie Fischbach with less than a minute left in the first half halted a 12-3 Carthage run.
- Eliot Dojutrek laid one in during the winding seconds of the first half to put the Spartans within one possession. She led AU in the first half with eight points and a couple of steals defensively.
- Vargas also had a block in the first half, as she was a constant presence defensively and on the glass all night long.
- Carthage took a 40-37 lead into the halftime break.
- Gabrielle Wolff came out firing in the second half and netted nine points in the third quarter. 
- Sam Barrett knocked down a three with just three seconds remaining to make it 62-60 Carthage heading into the fourth quarter.
- AU again shot over 60% in the third quarter.
- A layup and free throw from Dojutrek gave the Spartans a one point lead just 30 seconds into the fourth.
- The fourth quarter saw seven lead changes and the score sat tied at 75 with just 1:21 remaining
- Seven free throws from Wolff sealed the deal in an 8-0 Spartan scoring run to finish the game.
- With nine rebounds in the second half, Vargas finished the game with 15 boards.
- She also added three more steals and two blocks in the second half to finish with four of each in the game.
- This gave AU the 83-75 victory.
