Spartans remain unbeaten with win at Lakeland

The Aurora University Spartan football team continued its unbeaten mark in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with a 49-14 road win at Lakeland University on Saturday.

How it happened
- The Spartans won the coin toss and deferred to the second-half.
- Lakeland would take the opening kickoff and march 75-yards in 11-plays to go ahead 7-0. The deficit marked the first time the Spartans have trailed in a NACC contest in 2024.
- A long return from Trey Urwiler of 39-yards set-up AU at midfield.
- Four-plays later Zackery Russell scored from one-yard out and AU was tied 7-7.
- Tyler Adkins hit Urwiler on a 48-yard pass to get into the goal-to-go scenario.
- The AU defense and Deuce Moore forced a fumble near midfield on the following Lakeland drive. Tavian Dennis fell on the loose ball to give the Spartan offense possession.
- After five rushes, Adkins hit Cole Jackson on a 26-yard scoring strike and the Spartans led 14-7 after the Cooper Winslow pat.
- 14-7 would be the score heading into the second.
- Lakeland capped off another long drive, this time going 13-plays and 90 yards to tie the game early in the second quarter.
- AU's quick strike attack answered right back following another long Urwiler kick return (41-yards).
- Six-plays covered 52-yards with Adkins finding Jackson for the second time in the game, this time 18-yards for a 21-14 Spartan lead.
- The Spartan defense stopped Lakeland on a fourth down try right at midfield.
- Tyler Adkins hit Ty Pruett for 37-yards with Pruett being stopped at the Lakeland one.
- After a timeout, Adkins scored from one-yard out to give AU the 28-14 lead with 1:26 left in the half.
- The Spartans would take the 28-14 lead into halftime.
- Starting the third quarter, both teams traded punts and interceptions with AU's Quintarius Davis nabbing his fourth of the season.
- After the Davis pick, the Spartan offense refocused with Adkins hitting Steven Gonzalez two-plays after the interception on a 60-yard touchdown strike and a 35-14 lead.
- Two plays later Davis struck again with the help of Ziah Smith. Smith forced a fumble with Davis recovering and being brought down after a 45-yard return at the Lakeland one.
- Zackery Russell scored on a one-yard plunge for his second of the day and AU now led 42-14.
- In a game that saw Lakeland attempt to work the clock it was the Spartans turn in the fourth quarter as they used nine-plays over 4:56 to go 56-yards.
- Adkins hit Gonzalez for the second of the day from four-yards out and a 49-14 AU lead.
- Lakeland then ran 6:23 off the clock to be stopped on a fourth down by the Spartan defense before the AU offense ran out the final 4:49 of the game with nine running plays.
- When the final second ticked off the clock, AU was victorious 49-14.
