Spartans go down to wire with Warhawks

The Aurora University men's basketball team went back-and-forth with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Wednesday night in Thornton Gymnasium, as the Spartans saw a three-pointer fall off the mark at the buzzer to lose 75-52 to the Warhawks.

How it happened
- After each team traded baskets to start the game, AU would go on a 10-0 run led by a couple of baskets from Dwayne Jervier Jr.
- This gave the Spartans an early 17-7 lead about seven minutes in.
- The Spartans saw its largest lead of the first half with 9:50 to go at 26-14 after a Joevonn McCottry jumper.
- Another bucket from Jervier Jr. as time was ticking down in the first half helped give AU a 37-30 lead going into the locker room.
- AU shot over 40% from three in the first half while holding the Warhawks to just one made three in the first 20 minutes.
- A three from McCottry halted a 12-2 UWW scoring run to open the second half. The score was tied at 42 with 15 minutes to play.
- Each side would find themselves tied again at 55 with eight minutes to go following a free throw from Jervier Jr.\
- A 7-0 run from the Warhawks later in the half gave AU a 64-58 deficit with just under five minutes to play.
- AU cut that UWW lead to just one at 71-70 following a McCottry finish at the rim.
- The Spartans were down 75-72 with possession of the ball and just seven seconds remaining. Mekhi Doby tried a step-back three pointer, but just missed sending the game to overtime with the shot hitting the back-iron.
- As a result, AU suffered a one possession loss.
