Spartan women lose 2011-2012 NAC opener

Box Score The Aurora University Spartan women's basketball team hosted the Eagles of Benedictine University Saturday afternoon in Thornton Gymnasium. The two teams went back and for for most of the first half
until the Eagles went on an 8-0 run to pull away. This proved to be a lead that the Spartans could not overcome. The Eagles went on to defeat the Spartans by a score of 80-56.

In the first half Megan Kohrt lead the Spartans with 12 points while Tracey Walsh of the Eagles tallied 10 of her team's 36. Kohrt scored all 12 from beyond the arch and shot 4-7 from the field. Walsh went a perfect 5-5 to score her 10 points.

In addition to Walsh's 10 in the first half, freshman guard Katie Hunzinger had eight points shooting 2-5 from the field and going 4-4 from the free throw line. She also recorded three assists and one steal.

The turning point in the game came when Benedictine went on an 8-0 run from 6:50 to 4:10 remaining in the first half. This streak included two field goals from sophomore guard Michelle Gaede. She followed
up her three point basket with a sweet jumper from just inside the arch. This eight-point run put the Eagles up by a score of 32-20. The two teams would head into the locker room with the score being 36-24.

The second half started off with both teams scoring a three point field goal. The first one was scored by Aurora junior guard Tenisha Brown just 10 seconds in. Gaede answered just 21 seconds later with a three of her own. The team would swap field goals once more before BU took complete control of the game.

Benedictine started to run away when another streak, this time a 9-0 run spanning just 2 minutes and 12 seconds put them up by 28 points.

The story of the second half was the offense of Gaede from BU. She lead second half scoring with 14 points, 12 of which came from 3 point land. She also lead total scoring for the game with 20 points (7-10).

AU's Megan Kohrt finished with 17 points while junior Jocelyn Wide added 14 points.

The game ended 80-56 in favor of Benedictine. The Eagles shot 58.5% from the field and hit 56.3% of their three point attempts. Aurora shot 33.9% and made 30.3% of their threes. In the free throw category Aurora made 6 of their 15 shots while BU made 10 of their 14.

After this loss AU is 1-4 on the season and 0-1 in the NAC. The will take on Rockford College at home on Wednesday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m. In this contest Aurora looks to improve to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the NAC.
