Box Score The Aurora University Women Spartans hosted the Regents of Rockford College
Wednesday night in Northern Athletics Conference action in Thornton Gymnasium. The game was filled with action and came
down to the wire with the Regents holding off the Spartans by a score of 63-58. AU senior forward
Megan Kohrt set an AU single-game record for three-point field goals made with eight.
To start the first half the Spartans went on an 11-0 run over the opening five minutes. A timeout was then taken by the visiting Regents to try and slow down the pace of the hungry Spartans. Stellar defense by the Spartans held Rockford scoreless for the first 5:30 of the game until the Regents started to stage a comeback.
Rockford chipped away at the 12 point deficit for the next eight minutes of the half and drew themselves within two points (19-17) with 7:49 to play.
With the score 25-23 AU and 5:01 to play in the opening half, the Spartans started to run away from the Regents going on a 15-0 run. Rockford ended the run with a basket at the halftime horn but the host Spartans took a 15 point lead into half, 40-25.
AU freshman forward Jamie Gooch started the late first-half run with three consecutive field goals in 47 seconds. Spartan senior
Megan Kohrt led the first half offense with 15 points all of which came from
beyond the three point line. She shot 5-of-10 from the field and 5-of-7 beyond the arch. As a whole, the Spartans shot a stellar 45.9-percent in the first half.
The Spartans came out in the second half and just over two minutes into the half built a 19-point lead (47-29) and looked to have complete control of the contest.
But AU hit a cold streak and Rockford started to chip away over the next four minutes and with 14:01 to play, AU still led 47-38.
For the next 5:24 both teams played stifling defense and neither team could manage a basket. The scoring drought was ended with 8:37 remaining when AU junior
Ania Dylewicz knocked down a free throw to put her team up by 10 (48-38).
Unfortunately for AU, baskets would continue to be hard to come by as the Regents continued to battle for the next five minutes, outscoring the Spartans 16-6 in this time span to tie the game up, 54-54, with 3:22 left on the game clock.
Rockford took the lead on a free throw with just under three minutes remaining. This marked the Regents first and only lead of the game. They scored eight of the next nine points in the game to extend their lead to eight (63-55) with just 0:09 left on the clock. Kohrt's record setting eighth three-point field goal came too late with just 0:05 seconds on the clock and the Regents held on to win 63-58
Kohrt led all scorers with 28 points, including an AU single-game record eight three-point field goals made. Rockford senior Britney Curry had a double-double with 13 points (all in the second half) and 12 rebounds.
With the loss AU moves on to 1-5 on the year and 0-2 in the NAC. Their next action comes this
Saturday, December 3 at home against Alverno College. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. in Thornton Gymnasium.
