Spartans fall in non-conference nail-biter

Jenkins led Aurora in the seven-point loss
Box Score The Aurora University women's basketball team fell to Augustana College Tuesday night in a hotly contested non-conference match up, 70-63.

The Spartans got off to a quick started as junior Shay Jenkins scored eight points in the opening minutes of the half leading the AU charge to a 14-7 lead.

Augustana managed to battle back though. With 6:05 remaining in the first half the Vikings were able to tie the game up at 22 when Marissa Pezzopane knocked down a jumper.

The Spartans struggled to slow down Augustana's roll as the Vikings were able to take 32-26 lead into the half. Augustana's Jessica Baids led all scorers at the break with 11 points. AU was led by Jenkins and her eight points.

AU was determined to fight their way back into the game though. After the Viking's opened up a nine point the lead AU went on a 14-2 and regained a three point lead when senior Joree Green connected a mid range jumper with 14:38 to go in the game.

The Vikings fought back once again. A old fashioned three play by Gianna Pecora and two technical foul
shots by Valerie VanRoeyen created a five point possession for Augustana and gave them a three point lead at the 11:10 mark.

From there on out Augustana built their lead up to 11 and despite the Spartans best efforts to make a late charge, Augustana was able to fend off the valiant effort.

When the game came to a close the scoreboard read Augustana 70, Aurora 63. Pacing the Spartans were Shay Jenkins with 19 points and five rebounds and Ciara Marlow with 11 points. The Vikings were led by Jessica Baids with 21 points and 9 rebounds and Molly Ethridge with 15 points.

The loss drops the Spartans to 7-13 overall. The next action for the Spartans will come when they travel to River Forest to take on Dominican University on January 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm.
