Spartan football coasts past Concordia Chicago 47-33

Box Score The Aurora University Spartans took on the Cougars of Concordia University Chicago on Saturday October 26 on a windy Vago field. AU would coast to a 47-33 win.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead, marching down the field on their opening drive. Jake Apple scored a 10 yard touchdown run to make the score 7-0.

AU scored again eight minutes later with a beautiful 19 yard pass from Jace Koerner to Camerhon Guyton. This put the Spartans up, 14-0 in the first quarter.

However, during the ensuing kickoff, the Cougars had an 80 yard touchdown return. This sparked some life into the Spartans who went on to march down the field in the second quarter to score on a Koerner 11 yard touchdown run and a 21-7 lead.

The Spartans held Concordia and forced them to punt once again and the Spartans capitalized. Senior tight end Ryan Mizgate recovered an offensive fumble in the endzone giving AU a three touchdown lead (28-7) with 3:18 left to play in the half.

The large lead would not last. CUC took the ball and scored at 1:16 left in the half with a nine yard touchdown pass cutting the Spartan advantage to only 14.
The half would end with AU leading 28-14 but Concordia was deep in Spartan territory in the final seconds of the half before freshman defensive back Peyton Thomas intercepted a Cougar pass as time expired in the first half.. AU dominated the first half with 316 total offensive yards to CUC's 74. They also forced Concordia to punt five times compared to Aurora's two.

Aurora continued to dominate in the third quarter with the Spartan's first drive of the second half ending in a touchdown. Mizgate caught a four yard pass from

Concordia struggled to stay in the contest, scoring six minutes later with a 20 yard touchdown pass. They failed at the two point attempt with some great defense on behalf of the Spartans.

The Spartans led by two touchdowns in the beginning of the fourth quarter when senior kicker Fernando Albarran drove home a 23 yard field goal capping off a 58 yard drive for the Spartans making the score 38-20.

The Spartan's defense stopped the Cougars and forced a three and out. The Spartans got the ball on their own 20 yard line and after a 76 yard pass from

Jace Koerner to Jaylen Robinson, they were knocking on Concordia's doorstep once more. They however could not find the end zone and had to settle with a 19 yard field goal by Albarran. The Spartans had doubled their foes score with that field goal, 41-20, putting them at a pretty comfortable lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Aurora's Trey Gonzalez forced a fumble and Anthony Doory recovered it in Cougar territory. The Spartans capitalized on the error with a 22 yard Jake Apple touchdown run. This gave the Spartans an even greater lead of 47-20 after the extra point was blocked.

After both teams punted once, Concordia received the ball at their own 11 yard line with 3:05 left in the game. They carried the ball down the field and scored with 00:39 left in the game. The score was 47-27.

The Cougars went for the onside kick during the next kickoff and recovered the football, but with 00:39 left in the game and down by 20 points, there was little hope. The Spartans were able to wind down the clock on defense even though the Cougars scored as time expired. The ending score was Aurora 47, Concordia 33.

The Spartans maintained a comfy lead for most of the game and were never in danger of Concordia's offense creeping up on them. Concordia ran 65 plays for a total yardage of 320, but it could not stack up to the Spartans 75 plays for 506 yards. The Spartans also had 15 more minutes of possession time that the Cougars, controlling the ball for 37:42 of the game. Apple had 149 yards on the day while Koerner threw for 244 yards. Concordia's Woodford ran for 63 total yards and Fischbach threw for 137 of their yards.

AU is now 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan football team comes on Saturday, November 2 when they travel to Lakeland College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Plymouth, Wis.
