Box Score The Aurora University women's basketball team fought off a tough shooting night with a solid defensive effort to win 51-49 at Rockford University in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
After holding a lead for most of the first-half, AU got a basket right before the halftime buzzer sounded from junior
Neely Marks to head into the half trailing by one 26-25. The shot by Marks would be a sneak peak to the end of the game.
Marks was two-of-three from the field in the half for four points while sophomore
Anna Roszkowski was the only other Spartan to have offensive success in the half, tallying 17 points, shooting seven-of-eight from the field.
The rest of the Spartans combined to go 1-of-18 from the field in the half. AU held Rockford to 12-of-30 from the field.
In the second half, AU would not gain a lead until senior
Shay Jenkins hit a lay-up with 4:32 to play in the game. The lay-up gave AU a 45-43 lead.
The Spartans maintained the lead until Rockford tied the contest with 28 seconds to play, setting up Marks for her game winning effort.
With eight seconds to play, Jenkins hit Marks with a pass and she calmly gave AU the 51-49 lead.
Rockford did get a three-point shot off in the final seconds but sophomore
Bethany Dorrington blocked the shot to seal the AU win.
Roszkowski led all scorers with a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds, Jenkins had 14 points and seven rebounds, Marks had six points and five rebounds and Dorrington had six points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
With the win, AU is now 10-10 overall and 9-6 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan women's basketball team comes on Thursday,
February 6 when they host Concordia University Wisconsin. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Thornton Gymnasium.
