Box Score The Aurora University men's lacrosse team hosted the Vikings of Augustana College in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC) Tournament semi-final game on a chilly
Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans would come out victorious defeating the Vikings 15-6.
Augustana was able to get the first goal of the game three minutes into the first quarter. AU would get on the board less than two minutes later with a goal from
fired one into the back of the net to bring the Spartans lead to 2-1, a lead they would not relinquish. Loyall scored 17 seconds later with an assist from
Max Obriecht. After Augustana added a goal with five minute to play, neither team would score again with the first quarter ending with the Spartans leading 3-2.
Both teams continued to play sound defense in the second period but AU's Miller found the back of the net, seven minutes into the second bringing the Spartans lead to 4-2. AU's
Zachary Olsen scored 34 seconds after Miller's giving AU their eventual halftime lead at 5-2.
In between the pipes for the Spartans was senior
Adam Holka, had one first half save and the AU defense was able to force 12 turnovers.
Aurora came out strong in the third period, scoring in the first minute and a half of play with Barry blistering the back of the net once again. AU scored five more times in the third from Loyall (two), Miller, Obriecht and Olsen tallying the goals to extend the Spartans lead 11-2 at the end of three.
Augustana would grab some momentum in the fourth quarter, scoring quick goals to close the game to 11-4. But the senior Barry tallied back to back goals to push the Spartan lead back to 13-4. AU scored two more times before the horn sounded, one from Kyle Fraizer and the fifth goal of the game from Barry.
AU defeated Augustana 15-6 to advance to the MLC Championship Game.
In all, Barry had five goals and one assist, Loyall had four goals on six shots. Holka had seven saves and the AU defense was able to force 23 turnovers.
As a team AU was a perfect 23 of 23 in clears had a 25 to 12 ground ball advantage and won 15 of 24 faceoffs.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 15-6 overall. Next action for the Spartan men's lacrosse team comes on Saturday, May 3 when they host the Championship game of the MLC Tournament.
