Just three weeks after becoming the all-time wins leader among softball coaches at Aurora University, Spartan Head Coach
Mike McKenzie surpassed another impressive win plateau on Sunday afternoon as the Spartan softball team traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and swept the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in a NACC doubleheader, winning 8-0 (5 innings) and 7-1.
With the game two win, McKenzie reached 400 wins as the coach of the Spartan softball program. Still in his 12th season, McKenzie is 400-106-2 (.789) and in six seasons of coaching prior to coming to AU, McKenzie has a record of 571-186-2 (.754).
In game one of the day, the Spartans coasted to an 8-0 win in five innings, scoring a pair of runs in four of the five innings played. AU went to work quickly, scoring twice in the first with
Mandey Shrader being hit by a pitch, stealing second and scoring on a double from
Larkin Langston. Langston later scored on a single from Aimee Raynor.
AU pitcher
Vanessa Hartzell struck out the first seven Warriors she faced and would finish the game with 12 and scattered two hits. The 12 strikeouts accounted for all but three of the Warriors outs in the game.
In the third inning, Shrader and Langston went to work once again as Shrader led off with a single and stole second again. She then scored when Langston hit a home run to center. In the fourth, the Spartans added two more runs on five singles in the inning and in the fifth, added two more runs to enact the mercy rule.
Lauren Huebner hit a two run double as the big hit in the inning.
The Spartans again didn't waste any time grabbing a lead in game two, scoring once in the first inning for starting pitcher
Natalie Zanella. In the third, Shrader and
Logan Cahill led off with singles and scored on a triple from Steph Starr. Starr scored one batter later on a suicide squeeze play and AU led 4-0.
AU added two more runs in the fourth for a 6-0 lead courtesy of three singles in the inning. After WLC scored their first and only run of the day in the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans added an insurance run for Zanella in the seventh with singles from
Taylor Moore, Huebner and Shrader with the Shrader single scoring Moore.
Zanella set down the Warriors in the seventh and AU had a 7-1 win and No. 400 for McKenzie.
With the sweep, AU is now 27-5 overall and 18-0 in the NACC. With one more NACC win, AU will clinch the 2015 conference championship and top seed in the upcoming NACC softball tournament. Next action for the Spartan softball team comes on
Wednesday, April 22 when they travel to St. Mary's College (Indiana). Game one is set for 3:00 p.m. (EST) in Notre Dame, Indiana.
