Spartans prevail in defensive struggle

Men's Soccer prepare to take on the Falcons

The Falcons of Concordia University Wisconsin came to AU's Vago Field today for the mens soccer match with the Spartans. After starting the season off 0-2, the Spartans have since won three and tied

one making their record 3-2-1 on the season.

The Falcons also come into the match with three wins and two losses after starting the season 1-2.

The first half was much about defense for both squads. Neither team was able to apply much pressure to their opponent with Aurora attempting just one shot in the first half and Concordia Wisconsin attempting four.

One real chance that the Falcons did have to score came as the Spartans sophomore goal keeper Ethan Cashen made a play on the ball but was unable to maintain control.

Concordia forwards were there to take advantage of the loose ball and just as they took a shot on what appeared to be an empty net, senior defense man Kyle Haumersen came into to block the shot.

The half would continue to be a predominantly defensive game ending with a score of 0-0

The second half began the same as the first but soon Aurora would turn the pressure up as they nearly converted on two good scoring opportunities both coming with about 38 min remaining in the half.

Defense would continue to be the theme until just before the 73rd min when Aurora once again would nearly score. Senior midfielder Mike Emma would square up and put a shot just across the front of the goal and just out of reach for nearby Spartan front lineman.

In the 82nd min, the Falcons were called for a foul in the box and would result in a penalty kick for Aurora.

Spartan senior forward Nick Helmer was called to take the shot and would not disappoint the Spartan fans as his surefooted kick beat the Falcons goal keeper.

The goal proved to be the game winner for the Spartans. This is the third consecutive one goal win for the Spartans over the Falcons.

This win moves Aurora's record to 4-2-1 on the season.

The Spartan men's soccer team take the field again Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 7:00 pm against North Park University.
