Spartan men's soccer team captured a thrilling 2-1 victory over the visiting Vikings.
In the closing minutes of action and surrounded by Augustana defenders, junior forward
Jim Kelly took a feed from senior midfielder
Anthony Amedei and splashed the back of the net. Kelly's blast got past Viking freshman goalkeeper Tyler Cowherd, giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead with just over a minute to play in regulation.
The Kelly goal culminated a Spartan second half comeback that started on a goal by senior defender
Kyle Haumersen in the 49th minute of play. Haumersen connected off a beautiful ball off the right foot of fellow senior (midfielder)
Mike Emma.
AU fell behind early on in the contest when in about halfway
through the first half, Augustana junior midfielder Sean Fidlow got his shot past AU goalkeeper
Ethan Cashen. Fidlow was assisted by Viking freshman John McSpadden.
The physical game was a tightly fought contest that saw both teams have opportunities that came up with beautiful saves by the respective goalkeepers.
In the end, Cashen would earn the win with four saves, while Cowherd had 12 saves in the losing effort.
The Spartans improve to 2-2, while Augustana drops to 0-3 on the season.
