Spartan men's soccer wins 2013 opener

Box Score After weather delayed the start of the 2013 season by a few days, the Aurora University Spartan men's soccer team defeated the visiting Cornell College Rams 2-0 on Vago Field Sunday morning.

The Spartans opened up the game on the attack and controlled the action throughout the contest.

Spartan freshman goalkeeper Zach Richter and the AU defense limited the Cornell Rams to no shots in the first-half and just three for the entire game.

AU finally got on the scoreboard themselves with just under four minutes to go in the first-half. Freshman Nick Cataldi tickled the twine off an assist from Ediz Yorulmazglu for a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans took the 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission.

Just 3:40 into the second-half, Yorulmazglu tallied his first Spartan goal for a 2-0 lead.

The game remained 2-0 as the final horn sounded, giving AU their first win of the 2013 season.

Next action for the Spartan men's soccer team comes on Monday, September 2 when they travel to Lake Forest College at 5:00 pm in Lake Forest, Ill.
